Original Hand Painted Chess Table with Chess Set by Kim Curtis.
What do you do with a short, little, square table? Make it into a Chessboard of course!
This came to us as a heavily varnished, pale wood side or occasional table whose sole purpose – by the rings on the top – was to put your cup of tea on.
It wasn’t just the basic square shape that shouted chessboard at me but the turret-like legs that were simply crying out to be given some adjoining battlements! This table definitely knew what it really wanted to be!
The table is painted in chalk paint and given a number of coats of furniture wax. The resulting chalky matt finish gives a suggestion of age as do the chosen colours – a dark, warm grey and yellow ochre with off-white highlights to give the impression of bleaching or fading over time.
The ebony and ivory checkerboard look is continued on the stretchers on the lower leg and a square of gold at each corner of the rank and file add a decorative element.
To accompany the table, there is included a matching box of chess pieces so that you can crack on with a game and then have somewhere to store them when you need a table to simply put your cup of tea on!
